Phan Van Tri was one of the exemplary Confucian scholars, a symbol of dignity in the South. He wielded his pen as a weapon to inspire the anti-French movement and relentlessly fought against traitors and collaborators seeking favors. His ten poetic battles with Ton Tho Tuong vividly demonstrated Phan Van Tri's firm stance against the French. The poetic battle with Ton Tho Tuong stirred up the literary circles of the South in the latter half of the 19th century. Today, the temple dedicated to Grandfather Phan Van Tri stands on his native land in Thanh Phu Dong commune, Giong Trom district, Ben Tre province. It has been recognized as a provincial-level historical and cultural relic by the Provincial People's Committee since 2014.
