The event of attacking American boats took place on the Giồng Trôm River in Lương Hòa commune, Bảo Thạnh district, Kiến Hòa province (now Lương Hòa commune, Giồng Trôm district, Bến Tre province) in 1968. From late 1967 to June 1969, the boat hunting squad sank and burned 254 enemy boats (including a small gunboat sunk), destroying over 5,000 enemy soldiers, 5 105mm and 155mm cannons, 7 fighter planes, and 8 military vehicles. The 'Boat Hunting' squad was awarded the Third Class Military Exploit Medal, 3 Combat Medals, 1 flag 'Hero of endurance, destroyer of many American boats', and was honored by the temporary government of the Republic of South Vietnam with the title 'Hero of the Armed Forces'. To commemorate the contributions of the former special forces soldiers, a Victory Monument was built by the local government and people on the bank of the Lương Hòa commune river, located in Hòa Lợi hamlet, Lương Hòa commune, Giồng Trôm district, about 15km from the center of Bến Tre city.
