This is a place where the largest and most cruel massacre of the French colonialists against the Southern people took place. Phong Nam commune is the place for strong development of the revolutionary movement , also an important defense line in controlling the waterway from Chet Say canal to Vam An Hoa. In addition, Phong Nam commune has a water transportation system connecting Ben Tre Town with My Tho. The French colonialists carried out many sweeps of communes in the area before, but with the support and protection of the people, the revolutionary forces were not damaged. Thus, they turned to oppressing and terrorizing the masses to frighten people and no longer be a support for the revolution. In the early morning of January 10, 1947 ( December 19, year of the Fire Dog), a motorboat ran from An Hoa carrying 2 Le Duong platoons of soldiers led by second lieutenant Leon Leroy and entered the Chet Say canal, they landed at Vam Han and then divided into two wings to enter hamlet 2, Phong Nam commune and Cau Hoa hamlet. At Cau Hoa hamlet, they massacred and killed many people, mostly the elderly, children, and women. They looted property, destroyed furniture, and then set fire to the house. The remaining wing followed the Kinh Cu stream into Hamlet 2. Wherever they went, they burned and killed whatever they saw. The massacre lasted until 11:00 a.m., then they joined forces and boarded the boat to return to An Hoa. After the withdrew of enemy, the survivors returned to look for relatives, but it only showed a horrifying scene before their eyes, houses were destroyed, and the dead were scattered beyond recognition. The existing people had to endure the pain and search for the bodies of those massacred and buried in mass graves. In this massacre, a total of 286 innocent people were killed and nearly 100 houses were burned, the death was found in about 65 households . Among them, a family had all 17 massacred people and a family had no one left alive. Too speechless to face the enemy's brutality, turning pain into strength, hundreds of young people set out after the massacre to kill the enemy , save the country and avenge their relatives and compatriots. In 1985, the Party Committee and people of Phong Nam commune built a memorial stele at Cau Hoa intersection, which people often call the Hate Stele.

In 2005, the Ben Tre Department of Culture and Information (now the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism) was the investor who built a stele and memorial house to commemorate the massacre victims then inaugurated in 2008. .

Every year, on December 18, the people and local authorities solemnly organize the death anniversary at the memorial house. Relic is a red address to educate patriotic traditions for next generation to review the fighting traditions of our people, especially young people to understand the nation's history.
