Leader of Soldier Nguyen Ngoc Thang was not only a hero who fought against foreign invaders but also a person who contributed to generations of colonizing residents to create the prosperous My Long region today. He was born in 1798, from Luong Thanh village, Bao Huu district, Vinh Long province. He was very intelligent, good at literature and martial arts. He embarked on a military career as a plantation manager in Bao Huu district during the reign of King Thieu Tri. His name is closely associated with the location of Cay Mai post and the battles from the west of Chi Hoa post until the day Chi Hoa post fell. He is also reknown for his "blind enemy" strategy of using blind enemy to fight the enemy. After losing Gia Dinh and Dinh Tuong citadels, leader Nguyen Ngoc Thang brought his troops to Go Cong, coordinating with Truong Dinh's insurgent army to participate in fighting the French during the time he was stationed here, most notably was the battle with France at the base "dark leaves". In this battle, he was shot and died on the full moon day of the 5th month, the year of the Fire Dog (June 27, 1866). The 15th day of the 5th lunar month is annually chosen as the death anniversary at the relic site. The relic grounds include the tomb of  Leader of Soldier Nguyen Ngoc Thang and the temple. About the grave site, local people and his family always try to preserve his grave. Preserving and worshiping the grave of an anti-French hero was not an easy task for the French colonial government, so in order to preserve the integrity of his grave, local people did surrounding tombstones so that the French colonialists would not know which graves were real and which were fake to destroy. The temple to honor  Leader of Soldier Nguyen Ngoc Thang was formerly My Thanh communal house which was built a long time ago, but due to sabotage by the war, it was much damaged. In 1960, the communal house was repaired and preserved until today. Initially, his worship was located at a small temple in the village. Until 1973, Mr. Nguyen Van Tran had a tablet engraved with his name and brought it to the "Hoa Dong Religion" pagoda to worship. On May 15, 1984 of the lunar calendar, under the leadership of the local government, elders and local people, they invited the soldier's tablet from the pagoda to My Thanh communal house and worshiped it as a deity in the village. And from then on, My Thanh communal house was renamed the Temple of  Leader of Soldier Nguyen Ngoc Thang.
