Take advantage of coconut paper paintings

The author of the product "Ben Tre hats from coconut paper" is Tran Thi Thanh Thao (6th grade), along with the following students: Nguyen Thi Phuong Linh (8th grade), Pham Tran Kieu Vy (8th grade), Vo Quoc An (grade 8), Mai Gia Han (grade 6), Primary - Middle School (TH-Middle School) Phuoc Hiep, Mo Cay Nam district.

Thanh Thao spoke slowly: On a random occasion, we heard teacher Ngo Song Dao say that natural resources are limited, ST ideas are limitless. Useful ST ideas will create products that serve people. She talked about Mr. Huynh Van Cuong - Director of Escoco Vietnam Company Limited. The story of Mr. Cuong creating artistic coconut paper paintings from pureed coconut shells is very impressive and "passes the fire" to us. However, in the process of making orders, there are products that do not meet high artistic standards in terms of color, pattern, or even a large picture with a small error that must be discarded. When we discovered this, we came up with the idea to take advantage of the defective papers to make conical hats - a very common sun and rain protection item and rich in traditional culture in my hometown. From there, we wrote together the idea and successfully tested a completely new hat, called "Ben Tre hat from coconut paper".

“We took advantage of bamboo hat frames that were old and had torn leaves to perform the technique of gluing coconut paper onto the hat frame. However, to glue the paper to the frame, we will attach 4 more coconut stems from the top of the cone so that the distance between the 4 trees is even, to help make the hat more sturdy. When pasting, use a moderate amount of background glue, because excess will wrinkle the paper. After that, cut out the pattern to cover the paper, each cone chooses a different pattern such as coconut leaf pattern, coconut flower branch, coconut flower petal, lotus flower... The final step is to spin the cone with Ha Dong silk.. .", Thanh Thao shared.

For hats with lotus patterns, children will use yellow silk to match Buddhist beliefs. Or hats with patterns of trees and coconut leaves will be tied with colored silk, used to promote Ben Tre coconut hometown, and participate in typical tourism products of the province. Users can cover the hat with a thin plastic bag (the type used to cover conical hats) to preserve the hat beautifully, make it more durable or to prevent the hat from getting wet when worn in the rainy season.

In addition, the children also know how to take advantage of the waste paper in the cone making process to create other products, which is to make small 3D picture frames, from coconut paper to decorate home and classroom spaces. .

Encourage creativity and entrepreneurship

Thanh Thao further confided, in the future she will try to learn how to make coconut paper so that she can develop skills without being too dependent on paper companies. On the one hand, ST research helps us become more sensitive to life to develop more new ideas, as well as perfect ideas and feasible implementation of new ideas.

Using ST will create useful products, which is the beginning of success. ST not only creates useful products but also demonstrates the uniqueness and specificity of the region, the path to starting a business and skills becomes more favorable, ensuring success.

At the same time, they also want to propagate to their friends that natural resources are limited, they must be saved, not wasted, and conservation is the way to increase the value of natural resource use.

Ms. Ngo Song Dao - teacher of Phuoc Hiep Secondary School said that she was very interested in being exposed to the ST - KN program. Therefore, in each of her lectures, she always encourages STDs in her students. She often introduces topics about ST - Skills for students to approach and create many learning activities to introduce and stimulate students to have ideas and boldly solve problems raised in daily life. Thereby, helping students to be motivated in studying, to see the necessity of striving to study well, to constantly research, explore, and prepare for their future path of ST skills. The product "Ben Tre hats from coconut paper" is also one of the quite unique initial results of teachers and students on the topic of ST - KN in schools.
