Developing Green Tourism

Green tourism is understood as tourism that responsibly interacts with natural environments, contributing to conservation and preservation efforts while also maintaining and promoting local cultures. It aims to create employment opportunities, improve livelihoods, and enhance the overall visitor experience. Recently, many tourism operators and travel agencies in the province have embraced green tourism as the right direction for sustainable development, aiming to leave a positive impact and highlight the unique identity of coconut homeland tourism.

The core of green tourism lies in green tourism products. To ensure that these products are green, they need to meet certain criteria: They are made from environmentally friendly materials. They provide safe solutions for the environment and health. They minimize environmental impact during use. They create a friendly and safe environment for health.

Recently, with the province's direction and specific implementation by relevant departments, tourism spots, and homestays in the province have been trained, guided, and encouraged to use environmentally friendly items in serving tourists. For example, the use of natural materials like bamboo and grass straws in serving guests has become increasingly popular. Additionally, the new style homestays incorporating materials like coconut and natural elements in decoration and construction have created impressive highlights for tourists near and far.

Many community-based tourism products and experiential tourism activities that highlight the province's indigenous resources have been actively promoted, contributing to the conservation of local culture, job creation, and livelihood improvement for residents. Notable examples include eco-tourism activities at Hai Van Farm - Vam Ho Bird Garden (featuring bird watching, Ba Lai River tours, visits to traditional crafts like weaving and rice paper making); community tourism on Con Nhan Island in Ba Tri district; Maison du Pays de Bến Tre homestay in Thạnh Phú Đông commune, Giồng Trôm district; and Cồn Bà Tư homestay in Thới Thuận commune, Bình Đại district. These destinations have gained popularity and trust among tourists who appreciate and choose them.

Raising Environmental Awareness

Alongside these efforts, there has been continuous awareness-raising about environmental protection, including campaigns to minimize the use of single-use plastic bags and items. Recently, the People's Committee of Bến Tre City organized a river cleanup event where tourists actively participated. The tourism sector of Bến Tre City has also facilitated the development of green tourism products by travel companies and tour operators. In recent years, C2T Communications and Tourism Company (Bến Tre City) has notably promoted models like "climate-resilient tourism" and "regenerative tourism." Through these tours, visitors experience the lives of coastal residents directly impacted by climate change, gaining understanding and participating alongside local communities in climate change adaptation efforts such as coastal tree planting.

Tourists play a pivotal role in supporting the tourism industry, and their consumption behaviors significantly impact the entire tourism process. The awareness and actions of tourists are crucial for the sustainable development of the environment. The Vietnam Tourism Association has implemented the "Tourism Joins Hands to Protect the Environment, Reduce Plastic Waste" action program.

The regenerative tourism tours conducted by C2T Communications and Tourism Company have been highly effective, particularly with their riverbank life experience tours in Bến Tre. After a day cruising on the waters of the Bến Tre River and learning about the local riverside ecosystem, tourists participate in planting mangroves and water coconut trees along the riverbanks. Additionally, tourists gain deeper insights into the impacts of climate change and the erosion of river and coastal banks. They wade through mud, personally planting young mangroves and water coconut saplings. Through these experiences, tourists develop a greater understanding and consciousness of their responsibilities towards the environment.

The Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and the Department of Natural Resources and Environment have planned to collaborate on activities aimed at enhancing environmental protection capabilities linked with tourism development across the province in 2023. Accordingly, the two departments will coordinate efforts to disseminate information, policies, and laws regarding resource management and environmental conservation within cultural, sports, and tourism activities. They will conduct awareness campaigns to promote environmental protection among officials, employees at managing agencies overseeing tourism sectors, historical sites, tourism spots, tour guide teams, service providers in the tourism industry, and the local community.
