Sitting down under a Sterculia foetida tree
Drinking iced tea to remember the day that sneaks out at the back of the house.
Hey dear, don't disparage and lie
Because when you travel far from home, the home scent will follow you forever.

The vast majority of people grew up and lived in Giong Trom but did not know about the Sterculia foetida tree. Because every day the land is narrow and crowded with people, the tree species do not have much economic value and were removed from this land a long time ago. Only the place names of Giong Trom district and Cay Trom district remain in Dong Ngo hamlet, Binh Hoa commune. More than twenty years ago, Mr. Bui Quang Minh - Director of the Giong Trom District Cultural and Sports Center, on a business trip, asked for four Sterculia foetida seedlings and planted them in front of the agency with full implications.
According to many elders as well as teacher and poet Le Minh (82 years old), the place name Giong Trom has been in folk and history books since ancient times. Because the cultivated land here has many arbutus trees, the name was formed. It has the same origin as Giong Tre, Giong Chuoi in Ba Tri, Giong Xoai... in City. That's Ben Tre.

The Giong Trom people, including the Ben Tre people, are very unfamiliar with the Sterculia foetida tree, but in some other regions, the Sterculia foetida is quite familiar like the coconut tree to the Ben Tre people. They grow in forests in the Central Highlands and along the Central provinces. Even in the Southeast Nursery in Dong Nai city , Ho Chi Minh, Hanoi... all have tree plantings, for shade. There are places called rice flower trees, or cup trees. (Because the fruit resembles a snare). Or called a Sterculia foetida fan (Because the leaves spread out like a fan shape). There is also a place called Trom Stink. (Because Tram flowers have a bad smell). The scientific name is Sterculia Foetida. Many places use sawn wood to make household items. The way to extract latex (resin) is similar to extracting rubber latex. Trom latex is used as a very useful beverage because it is rich in nutrients. Or used to detoxify and prevent constipation. Binh Thuan is famous for its thousands of bamboo forests. Co Thach tourist area in City. Phan Thiet (Binh Thuan) has many stalls full of Trom latex as if selling a speciality. In addition, Trom leaves have medicinal properties, antibiotics, laxatives...
Especially the leaves fall at the end of winter. Young leaves and flowers appear at the beginning of the rainy season. That is from around February to April of the solar calendar. When young, the fruit is light green, then gradually turns orange-red, and when mature, it turns dark brown. Each bunch is about four or five... fruits. When the fruits are dry, they burst open and spread out like a broken heart, looking very beautiful. They hang from the branches from May to September. Because the body is big, wide and sturdy, it looks very poetic and peaceful.
If tourists travel from City from Ben Tre to Ba Tri, (without turning onto the bypass) you will see four Sterculia foetida standing tall on the side of Provincial Road 885, Giong Trom town section. At the same time, this place is also a cool park, with many restaurants, beverage shops, "My Long Vietnamese rice paper, Son Doc krupuk", so it is also interesting for guests to choose it as a stopover.
