Van Phuoc Pagoda was constructed in 2008 in Bình Chiến hamlet, Bình Đại town, Bình Đại district, Bến Tre province, under the guidance of Venerable Thích Phước Chí, the abbot. The pagoda, bathed in the golden light of Buddhism, adds splendor to a corner of the eastern coastal region of Bình Đại. Over 8 hectares of previously barren, weed-infested, and swampy land, where the water was saline year-round, has been transformed into a spacious area for Buddhist followers from all over to gather, pay homage, and worship Buddha. On the full moon day of the 7th lunar month in the year of Kỷ Sửu (September 3, 2009), fulfilling the wishes of local and distant Buddhists, Abbot Thích Phước Chí initiated the construction of a statue of Maitreya Buddha beside the lotus pond within the temple's grounds. Sculptor Thụy Lam, known for creating the Maitreya Buddha statue at Núi Cấm in An Giang, the Maitreya Buddha and Amitabha Buddha statues at Vĩnh Tràng Pagoda in Mỹ Tho City, Tiền Giang, and the Quan Âm statue at Bãi Bụt, Sơn Trà in Đà Nẵng City, along with his disciples, were invited to construct the 12.45-meter-high Maitreya statue.

The statue weighs approximately 99 tons, made of reinforced concrete, and cost around 2.27 billion VND. The Maitreya statue was completed on the 15th day of the 12th lunar month in the year of Kỷ Sửu (January 29, 2010).

According to Abbot Thích Phước Chí, following Buddha's teachings: "Building pagodas, printing sutras, creating statues, casting bells... are deeds of immeasurable merit." To date, Vạn Phước Pagoda has constructed the Maitreya Buddha statue, the three-entrance gate with a pair of golden dragons, the main hall, the area for the Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva statue, the area for the Shakyamuni Buddha statue sitting under the Bodhi tree, the working quarters, the guest room, the charitable herbal medicine room, the merit board, and an altar to the nation with a portrait of President Hồ Chí Minh... all thanks to the contributions of Buddhists from near and far.

Additionally, Abbot Thích Phước Chí takes care of and treats the mental illnesses of 40 homeless and sick individuals.
